Female Powerlifting at Iron Revolution

It’s a common misconception that powerlifting is a male-dominated sport – not at Iron Revolution! We are a gym that proudly hosts over 50% female members and we are always on the lookout for more. With female powerlifting on the rise, here’s 10 reasons why you should join the Iron Revolution:

1. Powerlifting is badass

Ever feel intimidated entering a weights room at a gym, embarrassed to grab those 2kg dumbbells and work quietly in a corner? We’ve all been there, but all it takes is a good program and a little guidance to have you lifting impressive weights and feeling like a total badass.

[su_quote cite=”Karen Beardsley”]I love breaking out of the mould of “wow that’s heavy for a girl” when in fact, it’s just freaking heavy for anyone[/su_quote]

Powerlifting programs at Iron Revolution are custom-built to work for you. There is undeniable pride in that moment that you successfully lift something really heavy, and the succession of compliments that follow when you impress your friends with your epic strength.

2. Discover self confidence you never knew you had

Powerlifting is empowering. It helps you develop all-round mental and physical strength, resilience and capability that has incredible carry-over into other areas of your life. There is something transformative about achieving seemingly impossible goals in the gym that can teach you how to truly believe in yourself.

3. Improve your relationship with food

The most commonly asked question of powerlifters is always around whether or not you need to eat a strict diet. The answer is no, you can pretty much eat what you want.

Obviously proper fueling is important to performance in any sport but you don’t need to eat a prescribed diet to be a fighting powerlifter. As an added bonus, taking the focus off the number on the scale and transferring it to the number on the bar is an amazing way to improve your relationship with your diet and body image.

4. Inspire other women

Watching other women lift heavy is incredibly inspirational and there is no doubt that female powerlifting in Australia is absolutely booming. In the past year alone, Iron Revolution has seen 16 of it’s female lifters competing at sanctioned GPC competitions and the invitation-only ProRaw event held at the Arnold Classics.

[su_quote cite=”Layla Busacca”]”I wanted to be part of a gym with people who shared similar goals and you weren’t judged for what you looked like or how much you weigh. Every member supports each other and it becomes like a little family that you look foward to returning to everyday”![/su_quote]

At Iron Revolution you will inspire, and be inspired.

5. Be body positive

Powerlifting will teach you how to love your body, not hate it, and how to work with it, rather than fighting against it. At Iron Revolution, we define beauty beyond the stereotypical ideal and shatter cultural ideas about the way women should look with our love of everything big!

[su_quote cite=”Emily Johnson”]I love what powerlifting did for my self confidence. Before I started, I would wear jeans on a 45 degree day and now I run around the gym in my booty shorts! [/su_quote]

Of course there is always the added bonus that lifting weights will improve your body composition, make you leaner and keep you fit and healthy. And eventually, you will be looking for those bigger muscles that show off all your hard work.

[su_quote cite=”Anna Murphy”]Powerlifting makes me proud to be big and more rather than wishing to be small and less [/su_quote]

6. Challenge yourself to change yourself

Strength training at Iron Revolution is never the same old, same old. Our coaches are always looking to implement programs that change things up, challenging clients in new ways and getting them results. It keeps thing interesting and periodically provides new goals to work towards.

[su_quote cite=”Liz Mason”]When I started powerlifting, I was looking for something that I enjoyed and felt safe and comfortable doing. I stayed for what it has given to me – confidence, strength, pride, motivation, friends and so much more. I’m always wanting to go back to see what else I’m capable of.[/su_quote]

7. Be a social butterfly or hermit lifter

When someone goes for a personal best (PB) at Iron Revolution, usually a group forms around them to amp them up and cheer them on. Someone will undoubtedly film the lift and there will always be plenty of seasoned lifters that are happy to provide comments on what went well or where to improve.

[su_quote cite=”Karen Beardsley”]We are all genuinely happy for each other successes and it gives us all extra motivation and healthy competition.[/su_quote]

Some people do prefer to come in and get it done; working alone or listening to music, though they often join in at some point as the friendly environment can be quite infectious!

[su_quote cite=”Amanda Bergamin”]I found that the general friendliness of the other members there cultivated a  sense of belonging and allowed friendships to blossom.[/su_quote]

8. Showcase your hard work.

Many of our powerlifting members started out working towards novice competitions and now compete in sanctioned GPC competitions. We have women that compete in both powerlifting and strongwoman events and some members that choose not to compete at all. There is definitely something for everyone at Iron Revolution and there are many different ways to showcase your accomplishments.

[su_quote cite=”Kate Bethane”]I love the sense of achievement I get when I hit a PB. For me, being physically strong has huge carry-over into other areas of life and really builds a sense of empowerment. [/su_quote]

9. Join an all-inclusive community

Being part of a network of like-minded individuals all working together to achieve their goals fosters a real sense of camaraderie between members at Iron Revolution. Lifting can also be a powerfully emotional experience and being able to share that with a rad bunch of strong chicks is really special!

[su_quote cite=”Emily Johnson”]We have a beautiful community of girls who just love each other and support each other’s progress. There’s healthy competition but there’s no negativity between us. We’re all just so proud of each other, which is rare to find especially with so many girls. [/su_quote]

10. Be part of a majority

Across all members of Iron Revolution, women are the majority. Powerlifting is becoming an increasingly popular choice for women and Australian women are amongst some of the strongest in the world. We strive to nurture a totally non-discriminatory environment where you will find that regardless of your age, gender, height, weight, race, sexuality or sporting background, you can learn how to powerlift.

[su_quote cite=”Seona Banfield”]I love that I have many years ahead of me to be the best that I can be and that the sport isn’t age-ist. Powerlifting gives me confidence, separates me from the average Joe and keeps my mental health in check[/su_quote]
